Highlights from way back (based on
news on the web--corrections appreciated):.
Christy Bussard, a student athlete at
Bearden High School, was the individual
State champion in the women's 50 free in
1970 and both the 50 and 100 free in 1972
and 1973.
But wait, there's more!! Bussard at the
same time coached the Bearden team to a
women's 2nd place finish at the State Meet
in 1972, and the women's State
Championship in 1973!
As a child, Christy set several state and
pool records by winning 52 races in a row at
age 7, and held eight records as 8-year old.
After graduating from BHS, Christy swam for
UT, listed as "all time" for 1975-76, and in
2005 inducted to the UT Lady Vols Hall of
Fame.
Christy is the daughter of former swim
coach Ray Bussard. Hired in 1968 to restart
UT's swim and dive program, Ray served as
Head Coach. Among Ray's many
accomplishments, he served as Assistant
Coach for the 1984 Olympic team.Today's
John Trembley (one of Ray's UT swimmers)
followed Ray Bussard in 1988.
